Philosophy

Making art is a way for someone to convey messages. We use it as a universal language. We use it as a way to challenge ourselves, challenge our thoughts and philosophies. Art has always been used to create compositions with pleasing aesthetics, but it has always something more to it than that. Creating double meaning, metaphors and using various materials to challenge a viewer's mind. Art has a way of getting yourself out of a comfort zone and pushing to really discover something about yourself and the surroundings of the artist. It's not just something that looks nice. It is a challenge.

The crafting of the art is what separates good art and great art. What if it can get the message across but using less skilled techniques? One could have less skill and still bring a message to us, but when someone has crafted a painting and pushed the paint to a new level, then that is when we notice that work of art and see what the artist has struggled with to convey their message. Why go through so much for just one work of art? When someone can sit and focus on a task for hours searching for perfection and a quality like no other, then one can really make interesting art. Why is it interesting? One can sometimes see the physical pain the artist went through to achieve something or see the hours spent on glazes of painting. The viewer can feel the artist's brushstroke and marks much better when we see craft put as the highest expectations.

What is it about painting that makes good art? Why not just take a photograph? To represent something through photography brings us to a sliver of time. A fragment of a whole. Whereas in a painting we see that the artist stared and calculated every mark of paint. Paint is just pigment with a medium to spread it across canvas. Paint is more than that, paint is something to represent texture, flatness, tone, hue, shape, motion and just about everything else you can imagine. So why use paint? One can do anything with paint. You can be abstract, flat, non-objective, representational and dimensional. Paint is art that can be used to create anything.

Art is a way of challenging the public. To make a statement and have a viewer to ask more questions, than get answers. With out a viewer an artist is nothing. If there is no viewer there is no one to question our world and our methods. We as the artist need the viewer. We want the viewer to come back and we should give them more to think about. If the artist makes something that represents something that is already answered, than that artist is failing the viewer.

Art is a way to educate. How is it useful in today's society? Vocation, or hands on working. In our society today our education is lacking. We value things that are cold, logical and mathematical. We need more creativity, intuition and artistic. Removal of art from schools is a illogical move. Art is a way to give students the tools and helping them get to an end in their own individual way. Art is something that really shows the work that you have done. Only you can create your art. You cannot copy someone's art and claim the same amount of hours and time spent in creating the art.

Art is a way of life. Life would be nothing without the hard honest work of art. Life would be dull and have less meaning if we did not have the creative drive. Creativity pushes us and keeps us moving and it has done that for centuries. So, what is my philosophy of art? Art is the inspiration to question your world and yourself and create a well crafted body of imagery for a viewer to come to and take the artist's inspiration to focus on the questions created to create more questions for themselves.
